How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged window pane could be a nuisance. This can be an opportunity to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy benefits like increased comfort, higher resale value and reduced utility costs.

You can do it yourself for less than what it would cost to hire an expert. You'll need only the right tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with modern glass that is tempered or insulated can increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while preserving the original character of older homes. The process of replacing the window pane is simple and can be done by anyone with basic hand tools. You'll also require an extra window pane, glazier's tips pliers, and latex glaze putty. If needed, you can use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Wear safety goggles and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass could cause serious injuries.

Take out any broken glass pieces remaining. This is best accomplished with a pair of pliers, but a flathead screwdriver may be effective in the pinch. Then, use a wood chisel, or putty knife, to remove the rest of the old putty from around the frame and sash. Work slowly and carefully and be careful not to break the current window sash. It is recommended to do this on a sturdy ladder instead of the ground and to have someone stand below the sash in order to help hold it in place.

After you've removed all the old putty, you can prepare the window frame to fit the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction by subtracting 1/8 inch from the measurements of width and height. These measurements can be sent to a home center or hardware store to have a piece cut of stock glass to the right size. You can also cut the glass yourself if you have the appropriate tools.

After installing the new pane after installing the new pane, put a tiny amount of caulking along the edge to ensure it is weatherproof. Install a glazier’s point on both sides of the frame. This will help secure the pane. The points should not be so tight that they cause friction between the sash and frame but they should not be too loose.

Before applying the putty knead it thoroughly until it's soft and free of lumps. Roll it into pencil-sized strips. The first strip should be glued to the corner of the frame. Work from one corner to the next to ensure it's even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular metal pieces that allow glass to be secured to the frame without damaging the delicate surface. It's easy to learn how to use this nefarious tool and you can save money on the expense of an expert installation.

After removing the old putty, glazier points as well as any remaining remnants clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. If needed you can lightly sand the wood along the grooves of the rabbet to smooth rough spots. If you decide to sand wood, cover it with painter's tape to prevent accidental damage.

Take the dimensions of the frame and record precise measurements. Take these dimensions to an hardware store or home center, and have the new pane cut slightly smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure that the pane fits perfectly and allows for expansion and contraction.

Then, use the tip of your chisel or the back of the putty knife to tap in the glazier's points as shown in Figure 11. Apply a thin layer of glazing compound to the rabbet grooves and edges of new glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Allow it to dry and cure completely.

When the glazing compound is dry it's time to put in the new window sash. First, you need to coat the wood with an even layer of linseed. This will prevent the new putty drying out or cracking as it absorbs moisture. Apply this coat with a brush or the tip of your putty knife, then use the chisel or the back end of the putty knife to gently press the new sash and glazier's points into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches along the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A hurled baseball or a rock that is errant or falling branch could cause a window pane to crack or break. Fortunately, the majority of windows can be repaired by simply placing a new piece in place. The glass is held in place with a small metal clip called a glazier's point and putty, also called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with the rag, a scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves when you work. If the window is attached to the frame, you'll have to employ a heat gun in order to soften the adhesive prior to cutting it loose.

If you plan to reinstall the original sash, gently remove the molding pieces that secure the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is installed it is possible to apply a silicone caulk over the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't be leaking or fade over time.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets and the grooves in the sash, where the glass is. If they're difficult to cut out, try placing an instrument like a heat gun over them to soften them first. When using a heating tool, be careful to not scratch the sash and its railings.

Prepare the bed for your new pane by removing the old glaze points and putty. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, forming it to be about 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets, where the glass will be put. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If necessary you want to tap your glass lightly into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked then you can seal it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk prior pressing it into the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to apply putty on the crack to create an impervious seal to keep water out. When the putty dries then clean the oily film off the glass with the help of a rag. Allow it to completely dry before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it won't form a solid seal and could discolor or leak over time.

Paint

You may be concerned about replacing a damaged piece of glass. It's true that replacing a single pane glass doesn't need to be costly when you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of what it would cost a professional.

If you're working with a large glass window first ensure it is securely attached to the frame. This can be done relatively easy and quick with the appropriate tools and techniques.

When you are ready to start with the removal of the replacement window near me pane. Take out the metal glazing points attached to it. These are basically small metal triangles that act as "nails" that hold the window in within the frame of wood. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
