3 Wheeled Buggies

A 3-wheeler is ideal for off-road walking & taking on terrains from bumpy pavements to woodland tracks. They are also simpler to move between kerbs and up and down them compared to 4-wheel models.

Stability

With four wheels and a central point of gravity that's balanced by the weight of your child in the seat, buggies with four wheels are generally thought to be more stable than 3 wheeler strollers-wheelers. However, that doesn't mean a three-wheel buggy isn't worth considering, as many of these models are designed to cope with anything from rough terrain to busy high-streets.

For a buggy that's really easy to maneuver and will not let you down on muddy roads, opt for one with large rear wheels and a lockable front wheel. These buggies for all-terrain use also have pneumatic tires that are perfect for handling non-paved surfaces. They are able to be used even on sandy beaches and tracks in woodlands.

They are also excellent buggies to run with as they provide excellent stability on more rough terrain and can help you stay with your running companion. They're also good at going up and down steep kerbs as well, and most of them come with a suspension built in that ensures your child will enjoy a comfortable ride.

The one thing that can make a 3-wheeled pushchair tricky to maneuver is the large frame, which can make it harder to fit into narrow spaces and tight doors than a four-wheeler. Some manufacturers have solved this issue with a clever design which flips the wheels upwards when they are not in use. This reduces their size and makes it easier to fit through doorways.

You'll also have to think about whether your buggy is suitable for your child from birth or if you're planning on using it in conjunction with an infant car seat or carry cot. If so, make sure it has an upright position and if the design is compatible with second seats and buggy boards (if you'd like to add a toddler onboard). Many 3-wheelers will fold flat and be positioned upright when collapsed which is useful if you have a a small car boot or limited storage space at home. However, some will require you to take out the front wheel before folding if you wish to fit into more compact spaces.

Manoeuvrability

Three-wheeled buggies are more maneuverable than four-wheeled strollers. They usually come with a swivelling front wheel which allows you to shift direction quickly and steer with just one hand. Some models have wheels that lock to offer stability on rough terrain. Some models can even be used with an additional seat or buggy board if you're planning to increase the size of your family.

If you are planning to take your three-wheeled buggies off the roads that are paved then you should opt for a model that has pneumatic tyres. They can handle even the most difficult terrain. These tyres will need regular pumping but they'll be more durable than solid tyres and more likely to be puncture-proof. You should look for one with a swiveling front wheel that is locked to assist you on difficult terrains.

When folded, three-wheelers may be more bulky than buggies with four wheels because of the single wheel on the front. Be sure that the model you select can fit in the boot of your car and can be positioned upright if needed. Some models fold using one hand, and can be rearranged when folded. This can help save space in a small car boot.

A well-constructed 3 wheel pushchair can cope with most terrain from busy streets to tracks through woodlands. It's important to think about the purpose you'll use it for in the daytime. If you will be making the school run with it, it should be able to handle steep slopes and kerbs. If you'll be running with it, check that it has an adjustable swivelling'stretch' lockable front wheel to keep the ride stable.

Kath the MFM reviewer, was able to determine that her stroller on three wheels was able to handle urban and rural walks. The primary difference between a fabric sling and a modular seats is that the fabric sling fits snugly inside the buggy frame rather than sitting on top as a modular seat would. This allows for a more ergonomically correct posture for the baby that instantly gives lower center of gravity that is at the proper height. This leads to a more comfortable push, a lighter curb-pop (you do not have to exert the same effort and weight to lift the buggy off the curb) and increased stability and balance.
