BMW Smart Key

The majority of new cars for sale today have keyless fobs that permit motorists to lock, unlock and even start their vehicle without needing an actual key. They can be heavy and drivers are more likely to lose or break them.

BMW has added a brand new high-tech twist to their current phone-as-key technology by introducing the Display Key. Find out more about it in this blog article.

Keyless Entry

With BMW Digital Key, you can lock and BMW smart key unlock your vehicle by tapping your smartphone. To begin, download the app from the Apple Wallet or Google Play Store and follow the on-screen instructions. Once you've added your compatible mobile device to your BMW Connected account, you can share access with up to five family members or friends members who also have the app. When they accept your invitation, they can unlock and start your car without having to carry a physical key. This feature is available with or without data connection even if your phone is set to airplane mode.

The convenience of the BMW Smart Key goes well beyond just unlocking your car. You can use the BMW Smart Key to open the trunk as well as control your HVAC check your fuel level, and much more. You can also precondition your vehicle's interior so that it's cool or warm when you arrive. The only limitation is that your BMW must be equipped with Comfort Access from the factory or retrofitted by an authorized BMW dealer. If you're ready to set up a new BMW Digital Key, start by making sure your smartphone is fully charged and located in the same room as your vehicle. Battery Replacement

However, more recent fobs can have their batteries replaced by simply opening the key fob and swapping out the CR2450 or CR2032 battery.

For the more well-known smart key models (like those in the 1, 3 5, 7, and X series) you can use the small tab to release the metal valet key and then open the access port using a screwdriver or another thin tool. This should reveal a tiny groove in the port opening. The valet key can be removed using the tool to pull the tab in and push it. Replace the battery that was damaged and then replace the cover.

If you own a Display Key that has a touchscreen, you will need to adopt a different approach. The Display Key is water resistant but it is not waterproof like the standard fob. It is important to be cautious about exposing to too much water. It can withstand an excursion through the washing machine, but it is best to treat it as it's a smartphone. Don't be concerned about rain as long as it stays away from water.
