How to Replace an audi tt key fob not working G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your vehicle.
