WoW Upgrades - The item level upgrade Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for the latter due to the need to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item level upgrade used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and can be visited at any time to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks, to keep your equipment up to date.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to improve the quality of weapons and tools, armor and other accessories. They are purchased by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and the current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

Item upgraders can be found in a variety of locations on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades require a variety of means, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was modified a bit, and some new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a particular item upgrade level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less even if they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a few options. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more special and are utilized during specific item upgrades level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used on gear of a specific rank, and that every rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade can require up to 20 crests, depending on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which means walking around and doing outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade item routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't complicated to use, but it does bring some changes to the process of upgrading. When a piece of equipment has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the best gear you have available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to make. This is particularly applicable to items like rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The discount on the account will only apply when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
