Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A light double pushchair is easy to move around, especially for families with children of different age groups. They are easy to fold, steer and transport up and down the stairs.

Side-by-Side

The majority of light double pushchairs that we tested are side-by-side designs and are generally recommended for children that can sit up on their own because they tend to lack car seat integration. However they do have a few advantages. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both excellent options that offer recline that can be adjusted in both seats, a wide canopy and Lightest Double stroller padded 5-point harnesses. They are also easy to move around, despite their larger footprint. They are perfect for parents who are worried about getting through doors.

The Cybex Duet is a little different because its clever frame extends its width to create another seat, which makes it lighter than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating available. It can be pushed through standard doorways and is easy to move around on public transport. It can also be used as a jogger, which is a great feature if you want to use it in conjunction with baby carriers or a car seat, and comes in a variety of exciting colors.

Another fantastic side-by-side light double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, that offers more customization through a modular frame. It has a smart design that allows you to convert it into a single buggy or a double with the addition of 2 carrycots or car seats (it can even take twins). It's an outstandingly practical choice for growing families, and the UPPAbaby also is among the lightest and most compact double stroller stylish umbrella strollers on the market.

Try the egg2 which folds down to the size and weight of a tiny suitcase. It can be used as a single double by adding two carrycots or infant car seats and our home testers loved the sleek and easy it was to handle even when stuffed with children.

Double pushchairs with side-by-side seating aren't foolproof however -when your children are of the same age or at the same stage, they might be fighting over who rides in which seat. If they are at different heights, the tandem model could be the best option for them, since it allows them to face each other.

Tandem

While side-byside models might be more appropriate for siblings of the same age tandem pushchairs that are lightweight have their own charms. Some can fit carseats that are larger, and others come with reversible seats. Some even come with an extra carrycot or a reclined seat that can be flipped in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easy to access and exit from the baskets, though they are typically smaller than those on single buggies. Tandem strollers are light and lightweight. They usually make tighter turning than side-byside models. However, they could be more difficult to navigate on uneven surfaces and curbs. They can also be slower to accelerate and are heavier to move. This puts strain on your back.

A convertible double buggy is an additional option. It is initially one but you can also add adapters to make it double. They can have an additional seat, a carrycot, or both in the front. Or the children can share a seat. Some may have the option of including a buggyboard that helps an older child keep pace with siblings who are younger.

These strollers can be difficult to maneuver around supermarkets with narrow aisles and they can be difficult to carry a large amount. Even though it's easier to turn the stroller on a narrow curved path, this can be a hassle. Some are also more easy to turn than others, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for example.

Convertible

The great thing about convertible double pushchairs is that they are able to adapt to the changing family requirements. Often, they start as single buggies, and come with adapters that allow you to add a second child's chair or carrycot, or (in some cases) an automobile seat to the frame. Some can be converted back to a single when your child reaches the age of walk or prefers to ride buggyboards.

It comes with an easy-to-use basket between the seats to store things. The large canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining chairs and front and back suspension for smoother and more comfortable riding on rough terrain were well-loved by the home testers. It also comes with a handy cup holder for parents and a large, easy-to-access basket. However, they noticed that the seats' backs have tiny pockets that aren't big enough to hold much more than a phone and keys.

This high-end, lightweight side-by-side is available in more than 20 configurations. It also comes with a second seat and carrycot. It has a distinctive steering handlebar, rear and front suspensions to smooth rough terrain, an ultra-compact fold that can stand on its own with straps for easy transport and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks, and 10 inches back wheels with suspensions for a smoother ride. The only downside is that you'll have to purchase a separate baby carriage or car seat.

This multi-functional tandem is a popular choice from our home testers due to its easy-to-maneuver size and impressively large shopping basket that is accessible from both seats facing towards the parent. Its light weight (about the same as some single pushchairs) makes it easy to move around. Reversible seats mean you can flip them to face either direction, and the clever method by which it attaches an additional seat or riding board to the rear is praised by many. Parents also liked the fact that it can accommodate infant car seats and carriers from a variety of brands, including some which aren't usually fit into other double buggies.
