What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great way to repair your gear until you can get to the trailhead to have it professionally repaired. The problem is knowing what to do with it if you need it.

It is crucial to have the right tools on hand when you are out in the field. This avon welcome kit was developed with this in mind and contains all of the hand tools essential for repairs on the field. The tools are constructed of metal and contain minimal plastic so they can be used in a variety of ways. The kit comes complete with a zippered canvas coalcracker tool pouch including awl, reamer and twisted awl cutting shears and the gimlet (5MM), sinue spools made of wood, a bottle of coalcracker oil and a set illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

You might want to consider adding adhesive patches to your kit if there are several holes in your equipment. These heavy-duty patches have a high-performance glue already applied on a durable polyurethane back that allows a tear to heal. The patches are available in colors or clear versions and are durable against punctures as well as sunlight, water and extreme temperatures.

If your kit does not include any of the items listed above You may want to consider adding a water-proof Aquaseal wader sealant. This water-tight adhesive will stick to plastics, fabrics, metals and more for an unbreakable fix. It's ideal for repairs to drysuits and may be applied in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for at least 12 hours prior to using your repaired gear.

The essential field fabric kit for tents, packs and rainwear made from silicone-impregnated nylon. The kit comes with one Clean Tape repair patch and sil-nylon swatch. Also included is a 1/4 ounce Goretex Sealant & Repair Adhesive & Brush and Sealant tube. To use, apply patch over a smooth, clean surface of the damaged area, with a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper from patch surface and rub adhesive using moderate pressure (adhesive side up).

Surface preparation is essential for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone or oil on boots and shoes can affect adhesion. Use Seam Grip with Cotol 240 Cure Accelerator to achieve the best results.

Adhesive patches

If you're on the trail and starter aren't able to do a full vulcanising repair, these adhesive patches will get you back in the saddle quickly and without waiting. Simply roughen the tube with the included scraper, apply one of the self-adhesive patches to apply the patches.

Clean up the area that has been punctured and then use the tube-scuffer or sandpaper to roughen the surface which helps glue stick. Then spread a thin layer of glue over the patch and cover an area at least as big as the patch. Wait for the glue to become tacky then press the patch down with a firm pressure and secure it.

This kit includes two adhesive-backed, clear Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric patch for repair and a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive & sealant. Ideal for strengthening damaged sleeping bags, tents rainwear, backpacks, and boots.
