Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're better on shorter and intermediate routes than in deep areas. He could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver makes in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills since certain receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance is the league leader in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8), but is only 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets are from outside and it's hard to make a first down on an open, deep route.

On contrary, some receivers excel at playing inside, but struggle on the outer. This is a huge difference and shows just how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Additionally there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they align inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and are often swarmed by one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, as he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of them. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than the majority of players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup advantages for your team and explain why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this list however, he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable opponent for contested catch.

Another player on this list that's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has played in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key member of his team's defensive team. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is because he's playing with safety and linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
