The slot is the ideal option for wideouts that are quick, since they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the low end of the list. They're more effective on short and intermediate routes rather than deep areas. The percentage of snaps a receiver takes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skill set because some receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example leads the league in goals per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th when it comes to slot receiving scores (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside and it's difficult to make a first down on a wide-open, deep route.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. For instance, the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he completed a whopping 74% of his slot routes, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge difference and shows just how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also played 51% his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lining up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field, and often are in one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks also belong to this group. Both have been able create pressures in the pass game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the highest tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). By using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages and then placing him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is a major asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. Wide receivers who have high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

It's therefore interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players on this list. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position, and makes some big plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list but he's highly skilled and is a perfect player for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent player for contested-catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key member of his team's defensive team. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who don't have the same size, speed and route-running ability.
