For instance, the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he completed an astounding 74 percent of his slot routes compared to just 26% for boundary routes. This is an enormous difference and shows just how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside most of his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they line up inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and are often swarmed by one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks also belong to this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, and Moore has the best tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing his slot for nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside for base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a huge asset when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter however, their slot counterparts are equally good. As a group, wide receivers with high slot receiving grades score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as those who play on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

It's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets and flanker in two of them. He's running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players on this list. This is a great way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

He also plays at the X-position, and can make big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this ranking but he's a very high-graded receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player who's capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He's among the best in the game at catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great catcher who is contested.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key member of his team's defensive line. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside subpar linebackers and safeties that aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
