Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to raise the level of items that can be equipped, such as weapons or armor, as well as trinkets to a certain level. They can be purchased at any upgrader NPC with the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are inserted into equipment to provide attributes bonuses and other effects. Most upgrades are slot-restricted, but a few are universal.

Rerolling

There are also some exclusive and set items that don't need upgrading due to their inherently low requirements or advantages from upgrading (e.g. Naj's Puzzler staff, Goldwrap).

There are a few sets that have set bonuses that add effects when Link wears the entire set. They are beneficial in certain situations, like when exploring the Gerudo Desert or in a dungeon. The Desert Voe set, for instance, offers a Stealth Up effect that makes it easier to get past enemies.

There are also universal upgrades that can be slotted into any kind of equipment. These upgrades have lower rewards than the ones that are restricted to certain types however, they are more easy to obtain. Certain upgrades can be made into gems by a jeweler. They can be used to upgrade any trinket slot. Other upgrade components can only be placed in weapon accessories and offer a small amount of bonus without increasing damage.

Requirements

You can obtain upgrade components by crafting or purchase them from vendors. You can also loot or drop them from other players or get them as rewards. Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets. They can also be attached to tools for gathering. Most upgrade components can only be replaced by an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. These are salvageable using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.

The cost of upgrading an item could be gold or Dilithium depending on the item type. Additionally, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones needed to upgrade an item upgrading depends on the gear's level, and a maximum upgrade level is determined by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest upgrade level can be costly especially if you're upgrading PvE gear.

Upgrades to items can alter the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size and size, alter its operational or unwieldy specific weapon property, or alter the requirements for hand use. Certain upgrades can even alter the appearance of a weapon.
